Dr Hilay Irimaso a healthcare practitioner, specializing as a psychiatrist at Kampala mental health clinic high lightened the reasons why suicide attempts often stem deep silent struggles.
“Suicide is not a mental illness, but it is always a sign of an underlying psychological or mental health issues. Conditions like depression, anxiety, and psychosis can increase the risk of someone attempting suicide.” He spoke.
“Social pressure even without mental illness, can make someone feel like suicide is the way out. The weight of unmet expectations, isolation or overwhelming life challenges can push individuals to a breaking point.” He added.
“Someone who is thinking of taking their own life will often dwell on it and consider methods they feel would suit them. In some cases, they may leave behind notes or prepare wills. one of the earliest warning signs is when someone begins talking about their own death.” He said.
“If we could understand people from the perspective, they are in without judging or downplaying their concerns, we would be in a better position to offer meaningful help. And if you cannot help directly, you can refer them to someone who can. Having someone who understands you, does not judge you and helps you get the support you need can make all the difference.” He advised.
“There is a lot of stigmas around mental illness, and self-stigma is just as harmful. This happens when someone starts thinking. “How will people see me?” and choose to hide their struggle instead of opening up. They keep everything in digging a deeper hole that becomes harder to escape.” He concluded.
